Exploring Healthy Habits with a Twist

Updated: Jul 7, 2019

On April 7, 2018, the Sarah Wise Wooten Young Ladies Academy (SWWYLA) held a fun and engaging workshop that promoted healthy eating habits and positive lifestyle choices. The session was led by Chairman Raquel Durham, who presented a wealth of information on the benefits of including fruit and vegetable smoothies in your diet. To build on this discussion, participants were challenged to prepare smoothie beverages that were not only sweet and flavorful, but nutritional as well. The activity was

modeled after the well-known television show, Chopped, in which contestants are tasked with incorporating a mystery ingredient into an otherwise traditional recipe. The same rule applied for the SWWYLA participants. In addition to fresh strawberries, pineapples and bananas, the group was required to include three mystery vegetables (kale, spinach, and avocado) in their carefully crafted drinks. In true SWWYLA fashion, the smoothie challenge was used as a prime opportunity for participants to showcase their creativity, teamwork abilities, and strong public speaking skills. Following the smoothie preparation period, committee chairmen joined in to judge the participants on how well they presented their smoothies to the larger group and of course to select the best tasting drink. The Pinana Berry Twist smoothie stole the show!
